Lighting Up The World
1 October, 2008
“You are the light of the world. A city on a hill cannot be hidden. Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before men, that they may see your good deeds and praise your Father in heaven.
Matthew 5:14-16 (NIV)
You are the light of the world. You are the lamp of God. The Bible did not say you CAN BE the light or lamp. You already are!
Don’t let anyone tell you that you must do this and achieve that so that you can shine. You can shine the day you invited the Light (John 8:12) into your heart. How brightly you can shine depends on how close you stay and receive from that Light source.
Whatever your position or condition may be, the darker out there in the world, the brighter you stand out. Many would want to cover you up, you may want to keep a low profile and compromise, but Jesus said to put yourself on the (lamp) stand and give light to everyone else in the house.
Lampstands are used to bring up and out the light source, making the light shine more prominently. In the Tabernacle of Moses, the golden lampstand signifies Jesus, see here. In Revelation 1:20, the 7 lampstands represents the 7 churches. However, it is quite disheartening to know that not all the churches bring out the best in their people, like the Church in Thyatira and the Church in Laodicea. Instead of bringing light out into the darkness, these churches are willingly misled, drown themselves with man-made legalism, stubborness and traditions until they are lukewarm. A good, well-grounded church build on the foundation of Jesus Christ and the Bible is important because it will bring out the best of Jesus Christ which in turn will bring out the best in you.
The main point here is to let your light shine brightly before others that they may see your goodness that wells from a genuine and sincere heart from within, that is nourished by the Word and the love of Jesus; and they will know who the Father is and praise Him who is in heaven.
So we ready to light up the world?
I really like the design of an old-school Kerosene-Hurricane Lamp. Can’t wait to get my hands on one.
