19 Million Dollars Raised In A Day
11 March, 2009There was a little online frenzy yesterday after a local newspaper group published on their website an article of how a church managed to “raised” 19 million dollars within 24 hrs on their Sunday services for their church’s new building fund in the midst of such economical downturn. This article was also published as front-page headlines on one of their minor newpaper, see here. (If the newspaper site is no longer available, a fellow blogger had it on his site, see here)
In the midst of the cut-backs, gloom and more gloom, this piece of news must have caught the world off guard. While big corporate companies have raised billions of dollars in bailouts, renewed stock funds and stock options, such are “old-news”. Then why would a church collecting their own building fund internally appear on the news, front page nevertheless?
I believe in the midst of darkest darkness, the Church will light up the world; with the Light that is in us.
Sadly, the negativity of the world immediately poured in; fast and furious. Questions darts out generally are like why does the church needs such large-extravagant building, the money can better help the poor and a simple building would suffice Christ’s image, among other things.
I was reminded of an account in the Bible.
Six days before the Passover celebration began, Jesus arrived in Bethany, the home of Lazarus—the man he had raised from the dead. A dinner was prepared in Jesus’ honor. Martha served, and Lazarus was among those who ate with him. Then Mary took a twelve-ounce jar of expensive perfume made from essence of nard, and she anointed Jesus’ feet with it, wiping his feet with her hair. The house was filled with the fragrance.
But Judas Iscariot, the disciple who would soon betray him, said, “That perfume was worth a year’s wages. It should have been sold and the money given to the poor.” Not that he cared for the poor—he was a thief, and since he was in charge of the disciples’ money, he often stole some for himself.
Jesus replied, “Leave her alone. She did this in preparation for my burial. You will always have the poor among you, but you will not always have me.” John 12:1-7
The world as depicted by Judas Iscariot will always dart out accusations of the waste, of the poor and of anything that can rob us of true worship of God. While the church’s members gave bountifully out of their hearts in worship of Jesus, in faith of sowing their miracle seeds and in preparation not for His burial but His coming again, would you think this is of over-extravagance?

Devotionals

God doesn’t reside in a physical house of worship. He resides in your heart.
Enough said.
Yes, it is so amazing how God has moved with His people through the ages wanting a close relationship; in column of clouds/fire, in tents, in temples and finally in us.
Then isn’t it beautiful that so many “temples of God” all come together to give out of their overflowing hearts, as an expression of worship, gratitude and their faith, wanting to build a place to their best ability – giving Jesus their best and that is adequately enough where all of them are able to come together corporately and worship Him in spirit and in truth?
to all the haters, go drink some Hatorade!
As long as they didn’t get their money by lying, cheating, or stealing – what’s it to you? They can do whatever they want with it then. If NCC could have given it to the poor, then why aren’t you doing the same? Why don’t you go out and sell your car and give it to the poor? “Well, it’s only $10,000.” – well so what? The widow only gave 2 mites. Could it be that God looks at the percentage and not the amount? How about you quit judging people and stop being a hypocrite?
Dear Ivy,
Not enough said.
Yes, you are right that God resides in our hearts, so the church building is no longer meant for God to live in it like the tabernacle or temple that Solomon built.
However, we with God in our hearts need a place to reside or gather so that we can worship God and listen to God’s Word together like the synagogues in the gospels.
If the present meeting place is too small, isn’t it necessary to build a bigger one?
2 Kings 6:1-2 (NLT)
One day the group of prophets came to Elisha and told him, “As you can see, this place where we meet with you is too small. Let’s go down to the Jordan River, where there are plenty of logs. There we can build a new place for us to meet.”
“All right,” he told them, “go ahead.”
People need a place to congregate and worship. We are children of the Living God!! Surely we are blessed to be a blessing, I know my Heavenly Father would want us to have His best, yes, even a church building such as this…afterall, God gave us His Best- Jesus Christ.
I am reminded of the verse…
“Let your light so shine before men that they may see your good works and glorify your Father in Heaven.”
“Seek ye FIRST the kingdom of God and His Righteousness, and ALL these THINGS, shall be added unto you.”
… forget not ALL His benefits.
Thank you Father, for your blessings. I praise Jesus because of His work on the Cross, I now can live the blessed life of giving because I was given first.
This building is just the beginning!!! We will see miracles of healing, restoration of relationships, most importantly- SALVATION of souls!!! yay!!
Rejoice with us?
shalom.
Halleluhah!!
This building is just the beginning!!!
AMEN!!! and AMEN!!!

$19millon from church members? Consider the God they believe, there is nothing our God can’t do.
How NCC managed to raise $19 millon?
Answer: God provides.
This just shows how big people perceive God to be. God is able to provide for the church building and still bless the needy. It is not at the needy’s expense that the church building is built! Don’t understand the hooha.
If you see your God small, by all means don’t build a church and give all you have to the needy loh.

Good faith behind $19m donations
What mortals put together let not a mortal be allow to take away, open your eyes before its too late.
Believe but seek facts behind surrendering.
Remember RenCi? remember NKF?
Hi Normal Mortal,
Don’t really understand your point. But RenCi and NKF appealed for public funds, that’s donations.
The church collect tithes and offerings.
The difference? The presences of a sovereign God!
What does the Bible say about Tithes and Offering?
