Red Lanterns

“You are the light of the world. A city on a hill cannot be hidden. Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before men, that they may see your good deeds and praise your Father in heaven.   Matthew 5:14-16

You are the light of the world, let your light shine before men. But do we produce our own light? If not, where does this light comes from? When Jesus spoke again to the people, he said, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.”    John 8:12   We do not produce light, we are lighted up because Jesus who is in us, lights us up in the new covenant. Think of ourselves as lanterns. A lantern does not produce light by its own, it is the light source within that lights up the lantern.

There are two ways to make your light shines brighter:

1) a brighter light source: let Jesus shines brighter through your life.   But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another   1 John 1:7

2) a clean lantern: Draw near to God.   Who may ascend the hill of the LORD ?  Who may stand in his holy place?   He who has clean hands and a pure heart, who does not lift up his soul to an idol or swear by what is false.   Psalm 24:3-4

Personally I like the analogy of the Red Lanterns. We shine because of the Light in us, bought through by the Lamb of God and we shine with the tint of redemption’s blood.

Red Lanterns

But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus, his Son, purifies us from all sin.   1 John 1:7
