By now we can still only glimpsed at the full devastation of the major earthquake in Sichuan, China. Over 65,000 dead and the death toll is expected to climb over 80,000. That’s lives lost. Many more millions are made homeless, widowed and orphaned.

Birth Pains of China, Sichuan Earthquake Tragedy

There was an account of a mother who was buried alive by the rubbles in a crouching position. Upon discovered by the rescuers, they were surprised to find a baby sound asleep beneath the mother’s body. His mother had shielded the baby with her own body. Nearby there was a mobile phone with a text written: “Darling baby, if you are still alive, know that mummy loves you.”

Such are the things which made you question why a loving God would allow such tragedies to happen. But really, it has nothing to do with God. He has given the ownership of this world to us. And well, we gave it away irresponsibly. Thus, we have to endure the consequences of this fallen world.   Nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom. There will be famines and earthquakes in various places. All these are the beginning of birth pains.   Matthew 24:7-8

Birth Pains of China, The Helping Hand

But know that God in His mercy is not sitting on His hands.   Very truly I tell you, you will weep and mourn while the world rejoices. You will grieve, but your grief will turn to joy. A woman giving birth to a child has pain because her time has come; but when her baby is born she forgets the anguish because of her joy that a child is born into the world. So with you: Now is your time of grief, but I will see you again and you will rejoice, and no one will take away your joy.   John 16:20-22

I left China 2 days before the disaster struck. In my earlier post on The Fire Through China, I see the Fire of the Holy Spirit is moving in datum with the Gospel of Jesus into a place that was previously closed for ages that houses a quarter of the world’s population. The Holy Spirit working and spreading the love of God like wild fire in the land and also beyond.

The fallen earth trembles.

God, in his mercy, will turn the grief and sadness into joy. He will turn mourning into dancing. Let’s keep praying for them.
