The Parables of the Mustard Seed and the Yeast, small boy big trees

We are all very familiar with the simple parables of the mustard seed and yeast. Part of a series of parables that Jesus used to depict what the kingdom of heaven is like. The tiny mustard seed that grows up into a tree that birds can nest on its branches and a little yeast that makes the entire dough to rise. Unlike the Parable of the Weeds that was further explained by Jesus, the other parables were not explained in detail, so that He can explain things hidden; explain things of heaven to true believers but hidden from the world.

Most commentaries explained these two parables by the way of how the power of the gospel has developed from a small beginning to the huge impact it has on all of humanity, its beings and its civilizations. The work of Christ upon the open hearts of believers, saturating our entire being like the yeast in the flour, rising the entire loaf, see here.

We as part of the kingdom of heaven, I believe these parables also apply to us on many personal levels. Firstly, to challenge the human expectations that the work of God has to be instantaneous and overwhelmingly decisive. In an age of super-computers and super-efficiency, we expect everything to be immediate; by a press of a button simply. However, unlike most human expectations, in reality a tree must be allowed time to mature and the loaf must be allowed time to rise. Short fusing the process does not only diminish desired result, it may even destroy what was meant to build.

On daily living, no matter how small the doses of God’s Word, it will give us insights, wisdom and peacefully refreshment into our lives and our beings. Although it may not seem much or significant, but we know and must have the good expectation and faith that God is doing His work in us. We have been given great authority and commission, we have been given a great Helper; big things will happen to us rising to the ocassion.

A small revelation of God and our standing with the Father through the Son is enough to make our biggest problem looks so small. We are to know that we are the apple of His eye (Psalms 17:8), wonderfully made, faithfully minded, amazingly redeemed, caringly nurtured, truly blessed, highly favored and deeply loved. The seed or yeast that makes all the difference in us is the small simple truth of Jesus Christ and His finished work on the cross.

Therefore, since we have been made right in God’s sight by faith, we have peace with God because of what Jesus Christ our Lord has done for us. Because of our faith, Christ has brought us into this place of undeserved privilege where we now stand, and we confidently and joyfully look forward to sharing God’s glory.   Romans 5:1-2
