“The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, for he has anointed me to bring Good News to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim that captives will be released, that the blind will see, that the oppressed will be set free, and that the time of the Lord’s favor has come.”  Luke 4:18-19

In the gospel of Luke when Jesus first publicly read these Scriptures, it was no coincidence that He was actually declaring the very fulfillment of the ancient prophecy of Himself. He is the One who is the Good News (the Gospel), He is the One who will release the captives, let the blind see, free the oppressed and that He is the very Favour of the Lord. He, Himself is the very Favour!

But knowingly Jesus stopped short of complete reading of that passage. Do you know why? Do you know what is following next in the subsequent portions?

… and the day of vengeance of our God, to comfort all who mourn, and provide for those who grieve in Zion—to bestow on them a crown of beauty instead of ashes, the oil of joy instead of mourning, and a garment of praise instead of a spirit of despair. They will be called oaks of righteousness, a planting of the Lord for the display of his splendor.   Isaiah 61:2-3

You see, at His first coming, Jesus came as the sacrificial Lamb of God, the humble servant-man who will break the chains of sin and redeem the world through His suffering and death. On the third day, Jesus Christ resurrected, ascended to heaven and will come again.

Only this time He will come as the Lion of Judah, He will come as the King of kings and Lord of lords. It will be a day of vengeance against the enemies of God!  The prince of the world and his minions will be bounded. Death will be cast into the fiery lake. Darkness will be no more.

The grievances suffered by His people will be heard and comforted. A crown will be bestowed on your head instead of ashes, you will be filled with joy instead of mourning, you will have a spirit of praise instead of despair. You will be dressed in righteousness and display the very glory of the Lord.

The day is near…  The day of justice of our mighty God!
