Jesus said, “I tell you the truth, Moses didn’t give you bread from heaven. My Father did. And now he offers you the true bread from heaven. The true bread of God is the one who comes down from heaven and gives life to the world.” Jesus replied, “I am the bread of life. Whoever comes to me will never be hungry again. Whoever believes in me will never be thirsty.   John 6:47-51

How To Feed On Jesus - Shadowing The Manna In The Desert

In John 6, Jesus calls Himself the True Bread from heaven, the Bread of Life, and the Living Bread. He rightly linked Himself to and above the manna in the wilderness; bread that also come from heaven. We need to eat and feed on this True Bread to live forever.

But how do we feed on Jesus correctly?

If we look at the account of the first bread from heaven, the manna in the wilderness; it will give us some tips into how can we go about eating our Living Bread – Jesus Christ. You see, the Old Testament not only records the history of the Israelites, but from a spiritual perspective, it is always a foreshadow pointing to Jesus the Messiah, Yeshua Ha’Mashiach.

In Exodus 16, after Moses has led the Israelites out of Egypt, they complained about the lack of food. God then rained down food from heaven, with specific instructions for the heavenly food. It is these instructions that we want to look at and listed as follows:

1. (v17-18) Some gathered a lot, some only a little, everyone had just enough. Those who gathered a lot had nothing left over, and those who gathered only a little had enough. Each family had just what it needed.
– Jesus our Bread is always abundant and plentiful. If you have a large appetite and need a large portion of Christ in your life, then eat all you like as He is all-sufficient for you (2 Corinthians 12:9). If you just need a small portion, that is alright too; everyone’s spiritual needs is different. But whatever you need, He is always there for you and meet you at the level you are at. Ultimately, He is more than enough for you to feed on, as much as you can be fill up with.

2. (v19) Do not keep any of it until morning.
– Jesus our Bread needs to be always fresh for us, on a daily basis. No one likes stale bread, we need fresh revelations of His grace and goodness for us on a day-to-day basis. We, humans are forgetful; we are always fearful and anxious of our daily challenges, so we need our divine reminders. We need to know daily that God is for us, who can be against us? And since He has given His Son, wouldn’t He also give us everything else? (Romans 8:31-32)  We need our daily spiritual sustenance to function properly. If we didn’t skip our physical meals, we shouldn’t skip our spiritual meals either.

3. (v22) On the sixth day, they gathered twice as much as usual. (v25) A day of complete rest, a holy Sabbath day set apart for the Lord. (v29) the Sabbath is the Lord’s gift to you. That is why he gives you a two-day supply on the sixth day, so there will be enough for two days.
– Jesus our Bread can be amassed on the weekends. That is why we load and bulk up on our spiritual food on Sundays in church (Acts 20:7). It is like a spiritual buffet session where we build ourselves up, so we can grow and mature; coming together encouraging one another (Hebrews 10:25). And we the righteous, will flourish like palm trees and grow strong like the cedars of Lebanon, producing fruit. (Psalm 92:12-14)

How To Feed On Jesus - Shadowing The Manna In The Desert

From the way the manna in the wilderness is eaten, we can learn how to feed on our own heavenly Bread, Jesus Christ. His provisions and portion for us is always more than what we will ever need. His Word for the season, or rather for the day will be apt to build us up. Just like the physical; how strong we are spiritually – comes about by how timely, how much and how fresh we eat. To grow well, we must eat well.

For my flesh is true food, and my blood is true drink. Anyone who eats my flesh and drinks my blood remains in me, and I in him. I live because of the living Father who sent me; in the same way, anyone who feeds on me will live because of me. I am the true bread that came down from heaven. Anyone who eats this bread will not die as your ancestors did (even though they ate the manna) but will live forever.” John 6:55-58

PS: We also need to make sure we are eating the real True Bread – the good news of Jesus Christ, not doughnuts.
