God Among Us; God In us

Since the beginning of human civilisations, people has been trying to reach out to a higher realm; to the celestial gods of the heavens. The optimistic mysteries of the heavenly and dire recognition of the fallen state of humanity propels this relentless search, generations after generations. Even in modern-day, religions and its roots are still commonly seen and practised around us. People committing themselves to religious traditions, works and practices, all with one aim in mind – to reach their respective deities in the divine realm.

But can the lesser or lower reach the higher? Can you even call your nation’s president on your mobile phone and gets an immediate response? Probably not. Then, it’s foolish to think that a mere human can contact the holy God, the Creator of everything.

What is possible, on the other hand, is when the higher comes down to the lower. Instead of the beggar having an audience with the king in the palace, it is the king coming down to the level of the beggar on the street. Even then, the awe and shock from the beggar is probably immense.

This is the same as our God. We can never ever dream of reaching the Almighty by our own effort or works, no matter how much we try. It is He, the higher one, who will need to first initial the relationship. In the Old Testament, God made a way for Him to come down and dwell close among His people.

Then I will live among the people of Israel and be their God, and they will know that I am the Lord their God. I am the one who brought them out of the land of Egypt so that I could live among them. I am the Lord their God.   Exodus 29:45-46

Most will probably think that is good enough. However, there was still some distance between the Israelite and the Lord; God’s Spirit in a tent verse walking flesh of the people outside the tabernacle. In the New Testament, the Word becoming flesh and dwelled among us. Jesus Christ, God Himself – came in flesh, as a Human among humans.

So the Word became human and made his home among us. He was full of unfailing love and faithfulness. And we have seen his glory, the glory of the Father’s one and only Son.  John 1:14

You probably think, you can’t get closer than that, right? But God has an even better idea:

… Helper, the Spirit of truth, who will remain constantly with you. The world does not recognize the Spirit of truth, because it does not know the Spirit and is unable to receive Him. But you do know the Spirit because He lives with you, and He will dwell in you. I will never abandon you like orphans; I will return to be with you.   John 14:16-18

It blows my mind how God so tiredlessly, wanting to come down from His heavenly throne to the fallen world, to pursue His people; wanting to dwell close to them. And then, that was not good enough for Him that He came down even lower from a divine Spirit to flesh, so to dwell physically among us. And even that is not good enough for Him; that He went through the cross to wash away our sins, so that He can dwell not near or among us but in us!

It just blows my mind what a wonderful God we have Who wants this closeness. This is love. Hallelujah!!
